Sports Team are a London-based indie rock band, known for their raucous live shows, sardonic lyrics, and Britpop-inspired energy. Formed in 2016 while studying at Cambridge University, the six-piece quickly gained a reputation for chaotic performances and sharp-witted takes on British life.
Their debut album Deep Down Happy (2020) hit No. 2 on the UK charts and earned a Mercury Prize nomination, driven by standout tracks like “Fishing” and “Here’s the Thing.” With their 2022 follow-up Gulp, they doubled down on their signature blend of satire and stadium-sized choruses, cementing their status as one of the UK’s most distinctive new guitar acts.
Anchored by frontman Alex Rice’s charismatic delivery and backed by a loyal fanbase, Sports Team channel the spirit of early 2000s indie while delivering smart, often absurdist social commentary wrapped in punchy guitar lines.

April 15th, 2025—rowing on a calm river, soaking in the first semi-summer rays… Sports Team borders the absurd, their mockery subtle yet sharp, resonating with the slightly narcissistic individuals who might absorb flattery through their songs. I admire that style. The sarcasm intertwines with the lightness of flowing melodies, creating a persuasive charm.
I can vividly imagine a group of senior citizens sipping coffee in a quaint French town café, nodding their heads to the rhythm of Sports Team without even realizing it. Their music seeps under your skin unconsciously, bringing joy and awakening an urge to don a beige linen blazer, a straw hat, and hop on a vintage bicycle to join that coffee shop gathering. Sarcastic yet melodic, life can indeed feel effortlessly beautiful at times.
